October 16th, 2009: Hometown Glory

songs

I’m really thankful to have been born and to be raised in the Philippines, and am especially thankful for the fact that I was able to grow up in the 90s (the last pre-technology dependency decade, at least for me anyway). I think it’s safe to say that I’ve had an awesome childhood! One that I love reminiscing about…

I know that I have the tendency to bash my hometown, but you must understand, this resentment is really driven by extreme pride. I’m so proud to be a Filipino that I’ve embraced this self-imposed rights to express my bitterness towards the ridiculousness Philippines had become. Philippines had potential, but for some reason, someone was not a fan of this “potential” and decided to chuck “potential” down an incinerator many moons ago.

This is why I love listening to songs that take me back to the 90s. Songs that help me time travel back to oblivion, back to simplicity and back to my picture-perfect Philippines. Oh, those were the days. It’s really great to have a past to look back to and smile about!

So, listed below are some of the most nostalgic songs in my book. Unless you were born in the Philippines and/or grew up in the 90s, these songs will probably mean nothing to you. But…Enjoy them anyway (click on the song title):

The Eraserheads – Huling El Bimbo
The Eraserheads, for me, is nostalgia in audio form. Everything they make, and everything that comes out of them screams, “90s!” The 90s in the Philippines to be exact – the essence of my being.

Rivermaya – Kisapmata
Written by Rivermaya. This song reminds me of my elementary school years, and that just makes me smile.

Radiohead – High and Dry
People ask me, “why do you love Radiohead so much?” And I tell them, “Radiohead is my time-machine”. Their songs – naturally – are pretty sad, but they make me so unnaturally happy. It’s got nostalgia written all over it.

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees
Another one from Radiohead. Delightfully haunting.

The Cranberries – Linger
It’s oh-so-magical, and it just lingers. F’real.
